The guitar is a type of string instrument that is played with a pick or the fingers. Since its sound is produced by the vibration of its strings, it belongs to the family of string instruments. This type of guitar has six strings, and in addition to its significant historical background—both in terms of its structure and performance techniques—it has evolved remarkably alongside the development of Western music. As a result, various types of guitars have emerged, and today the instrument holds a special place in world music. The English word guitar, the German Gitarre, and the French guitare all originate from the Spanish word guitarra, which itself is derived from the Andalusian Arabic term qīthārah. This Arabic word comes from the Latin cithara, which in turn traces back to the Ancient Greek word kithara (κιθάρα). It is believed that this Greek term may have ultimately originated from the Persian word sihtar, meaning “three-stringed instrument.”
